YOU are very busy and badly need exercise. You are also gaining weight but don't want to be starved.

The solution: Go online.

In this high tech age where almost everything can be found using the internet, it is good to know that there is such a thing as an online diet tool.

The online diet plan in the Philippines is pioneered by Cheshire Que of My Spa Diet (www.myspadiet.com), an individualized weight management program that uses behavior modification and lifestyle change.

Que, who is a UP Diliman graduate in BS Community Nutrition and a registered nurse, nutritionist and dietitian, knows the struggles of weight loss because she had hormonal imbalance and has a thyroid problem.

She said it was not easy to be a dietitian with hypothyroidism, an illness characterized by weight gain and fatigue, but she overcame her personal struggle. Now she has hyperthyroidism, which is the opposite of her previous condition, and she takes pills to balance her thyroid hormones.

Que can empathize with her clients as she renders diet therapy to those afflicted with lifestyle related diseases (diabetes, cardiovascular/heart diseases, hypertension, adult and childhood, obesity, gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, kidney diseases, liver diseases) and eating disorders.

Clients of the My Spa Diet can be assured that they will not be starved because the program's principles center on proper portions, high-fiber intake, meal timing, hydration, controlling cravings and enough physical activity.

"We are in an obesogenic society where burgers are getting bigger and food is higher in fat, sodium and salt. Time pressures also promote a hurried lifestyle," Que said.

The My Spa Diet starts with an inner body scan to determine one's nutritional needs based on height, gender, weight, body fat and water, muscle and bone mass, basal metabolic rate and visceral fat. Lifestyle will also be considered.

The diet plan has four phases that are done in four weeks. These are cleansing by increasing fiber and water intake, detoxifying by eating less meat to lower cholesterol levels, rejuvenating by taking in more vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, and balance which includes controlling cravings.

Que said the diet program includes drinking a glass of water (preferably lemon water because the alkaline helps prevent cancer and lifestyle diseases) upon waking up. She said subscribers are also reminded not to go without food beyond six hours and not to eat three to four hours before bedtime.

She said a serving of meat should be the size of a deck of cards and a portion of fish should be as big as a mobile phone or the smallest checkbook. She said instead of the food pyramid, the plate method is used, i.e., half of the plate should be high-fiber and the other should be protein and carbs.

The My Spa Diet requires three hours of exercises per week, which could be divided to 30 minutes per day to burn the visceral fat, which increases risk for heart diseases and other illnesses.
