For all those diet and calorie conscious people out there, this is a good news. From this week onwards, fast-food giant, McDonald's menu will include calorie information along with its food items throughout all its 1,200 UK restaurants, the Department of Health (DH) said. The announcement was made in March this year.

McDonald's mainly sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, french fries and other fast-food items. With this new move, people can order their food more smartly, knowing exactly what they are taking in.

Apart from McDonald's, other companies which have already signed up to introduce calorie labeling on their menu are KFC, Pizza Hut, Pret a Manger and JD Wetherspoon. They should start doing it by the end of this year, a DH spokesman said.

"Research shows that calorie labelling makes people more aware of the energy content of their foods and does influence people's choices. So with McDonald's serving three million meals every day in 1,200 restaurants, this will have a huge effect on the high street and will help people to make healthier choices when they are eating out" he added.

"In March we announced our intention to extend the communication of nutritional information to our customers to include displaying calories on our menu boards across the UK," The Press Association quoted Jill McDonald, chief executive and president of McDonald's UK, as saying.

He also said that this initiative, as part of the Public Health Responsibility Deal gives clear information to customers and helps them make right decision.

McDonald's is headquartered in the United States and serves around 64 million customers every day.
