Do you want to shed those extra pounds with minimum effort? Well, then just slip into a pair of fat-burning underpants.

A growing number of Japanese men and women keen to lose weight are slipping into underwear that claims to burn hundreds of calories a week, simply by wearing them.

Perfect for exercise-shy food-lovers, the MXP Calorie Shaper Pants are made with non-elasticated material that the company has claimed can make muscles work extra hard while walking or climbing stairs.

The new underpants, from the Tokyo-based Goldwin company, claim that the average 10 stone man who walks 90 minutes a day while wearing them can lose 210 kilocalories weekly - the equivalent of half a litre of beer.

Key to the technology implemented in the underwear - which cost 23.52 pounds and are currently only on sale in Japan - is a resin which is printed on fabric to prevent it from stretching.

The extra muscle strength required to balance the tension in the resin during normal walking activities results in effortless loss weight, according to a spokesman for Goldwin.

"The concept behind this product is a pair of pants for every day life, generally for business men and women aged between 35 and 45," the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

"The Calorie Shaper Pant technology focuses on the hipline which is the area used by people when walking and climbing stairs. The material here is non-expandable which means they must use their muscles more," he added.
