HE ONCE weighed the equivalent of three men; now Nathan Meola is a different man altogether.
Mr Meola, 25, has shed 112 kilograms - the weight of an NRL front-rower - and totally changed his outlook on life, diet and exercise.
A proud entrant in next month's Rebel Sport Run4Fun presented by The Sun-Herald, he is proof that determination and education can achieve dramatic results.
"At my heaviest, when I graduated from high school, I weighed 246 kilograms," Mr Meola, from Padstow Heights, said. ''I used to eat a lot, really late at night. I couldn't walk properly.''
Seeing his graduation photos prompted Mr Meola to take action. He had lap-band surgery to reduce the size of his stomach in early 2005 and lost 40 kilograms.
However, his self-confessed "food addiction" remained. Worse, he suffered from bouts of depression and early last year became bed-ridden due to a herniated disc in his back.
Weighing about 200 kilograms, Mr Meola went to stay at a NSW health retreat for four weeks in May last year. It was a revelation. "I learnt about nutrition and how to change my eating habits,'' he said.
With a new exercise regimen, a partnership with a personal trainer and increased knowledge about diet, he has shrunk in size while growing in confidence.
"I'm planning to go back to uni to study in the field of nutrition and fitness and I want to become a personal trainer - I've really found what I want to do with my life," he said.
