Acne Drug Spurs Developments in Spinal Cord Treatment

A promising treatment for SCI, spinal cord injuries, based on a drug used to treat acne has been funded by the Rick Hansen industry. Calgary University researchers, Dr. John Hurlbert, Dr. Steven Casha, and Dr. Voon Wee Yong, have discovered that minocycline facilitates movement in SCI patients.

Dr. Hurlbert said that the results were amazing and their walking abilities improved, and their spinal cords had a scientifically better appearance.

Currently treated by methylprednisolone, SCIs treated by minocycline outperformed that standard treatment in studies on mice, according to Hurlbert.

Because of the 2003 results in an industry journal, Brain, the opportunity to complete research on humans developed. Dr. Hurlbert noted that because of the fact that minocycline was already being prescribed to patients, they did not face the standard difficulties associated with getting the human trials approved.

The trouble was in finding the funding to make it happen.

Hurlbert said that prescription drug companies could not profit in the research because minocycline's patent had already expired so they would not fund the study. However, the Rick Hansen Institute's CEO, Bill Barrable, insisted that these kinds of studies and advancements, like the minocycline study, their institutes encourage. Their goal is to ensure the quality of life for SCI sufferers.

The study's next phase will be funded by Rick Hansen Institutes and is a nationwide study in Canada involving clinical work for additional patients as well as six establishments.

Dr. Hurlbert reported that the first results of the human studies is under review right now, and he was greatly appreciative of the support of this acne drug turned SCI treatment program from the Rick Hansen Institute because without that support the work could not continue.
