San Luis, Ariz., wants to make it three in a row in its ongoing contest with Somerton for bragging rights as the city whose residents shed the most pounds.

But it won't if Somerton can help it.

Each city is fielding a team of 25 women in a competition to see which can lose the largest collective weight total.

The competition, dubbed El Reto or The Challenge, is organized by Campesinos Sin Fronteras, a nonprofit agency that provides health and social services in south Yuma County.

The competition began Sept. 10 and continues for another month and a half as members of the respective teams adopt healthier diets and exercise under the direction of trainers.

Each team's members are at least 30 pounds overweight and have not competed in the previous two contests put on by Campesinos.

San Luis teams won both of those competitions. But the program offers practical benefits besides bragging rights, said Flor Redondo, program director for Campesinos.

"Participants not only lose weight but receive information about nutrition, healthy cooking, domestic violence and various issues relating to the family."

The San Luis team will train under Ernesto Prieto, a San Luis police officer who also trains boxers in the city's Police Athletic League. The Somerton team will be trained by employees of that city's Parks and Recreation Department.

The competition will dovetail with the Walk Don't Weight weight-loss contest that is part of the 2011 Healthy Yuma initiative, a countywide campaign to encourage residents to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The winning team of the San Luis-Somerton contest will advance to the Walk Don't Weight contest, where it will face off against teams from around the county, Redondo said.

"It makes us very happy that these programs are bringing everyone together, because in Yuma (County) we are one community."
