Breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge says she believes that nutritional habits common in countries like the US are responsible for our high rates of cancer and other diseases.

Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, an episode that inspired her cancer-awareness hit "I Run For Life." After a series of chemotherapy treatments, the singer lost her hair and relied on medical marijuana to enable her to eat. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Etheridge says she believes the "toxic" diet in the United States is down to improper eating as well as imbalances in the body. Etheridge said:

"I'm healthier now than I've ever been because I'm understanding what breast cancer is… It's when your health is out of balance, when you're too acidic… It's not like a disease that finds you or something in your genes. It's actually your own cells going bad…. Our own western lifestyle is one of the reasons that half of us have cancer – because our western lifestyle is so acidic; the food we eat causes acid… the meats, the processed foods… and it's really taxing us, and that's why we're seeing this epidemic."

The singer also says she believes cancer and stress go hand in hand, and the latter is far more of an influence on the outcome of a cancer diagnosis than the former. Etheridge explains:

"You can eat bad, you can sit around and watch TV and not get sick, but if you are stressed, you're going down."

Although the theories Etheridge espouses have some root in the "natural" community, traditional medicine generally believes the "alkaline diet" is scientifically unsupported.
