Brattleboro, Vermont -- October 12, 2011

A Brattleboro doctor is being forced to close part of his practice for improperly prescribing weight loss drugs.

The state medical practice board issued its ruling Tuesday, saying John Bookwalter gave 21 patients pills without taking their vital signs or performing lab tests regarding the drugs effects.

The 73-year-old can still perform general surgery and is now appealing the board's ruling.
